The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

Traffic jam on a one-way highway

Imagine a highway where cars (blood cells and clotting proteins) flow smoothly northward through tunnels that prevent backward flow (one-way valves). Workers on the road surface (endothelium) spray anti-jam chemicals (prostacyclin, nitric oxide) to keep cars moving. Now picture three disasters hitting at once: roadwork closes an exit and strands cars (stasis from immobility); the tunnel ceiling cracks and exposes sharp concrete underneath (endothelial injury); and a shipping company dumps extra sticky cargo into the stream (hypercoagulability from cancer or estrogen). Stalled cars accumulate and pile up because the toxins sprayed by road workers cannot dissolve the sticky cargo fast enough. A massive traffic jam (thrombus) builds silently—no alarms sound, no GPS warns drivers downstream. Then one day a clump of stuck cars breaks loose, shoots through the tunnel, and jams the on-ramp to the airport runway (pulmonary arteries)—suddenly planes cannot take off, backup forms everywhere, and the whole system collapses (PE with shock). Prevention works by keeping cars flowing (leg pumps, compression devices) or by spraying extra anti-jam chemicals before the sticky cargo arrives (anticoagulants).
