Phase 1 · Understand the Body — Why the disease behaves the way it does.
The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
Thyroid storm is a life-threatening crisis when way too much thyroid hormone floods the body all at once.
A Car Engine Stuck in Maximum Acceleration
Imagine a car engine with a stuck accelerator pedal jammed to the floor. The engine (thyroid gland) suddenly dumps maximum fuel into the cylinders (hormone flood into bloodstream). The fuel ignites, and the engine revs to 8,000 RPM and stays there (heart rate 140–200+ beats per minute). The spark plugs fire constantly without rest (neurons firing nonstop), the pistons move so fast they overheat the engine block to 250°F (high fever, cell death risk), and the radiator tries desperately to cool it by dumping coolant everywhere (massive sweating, fluid loss). The engine tries to keep the car moving by pushing harder on the wheels (heart pumping harder), but the bearings cannot handle the constant high-speed grinding—they start to seize (heart muscle exhaustion). Eventually the radiator runs dry from coolant loss (hypovolemia, blood volume crash), the oil pressure drops, the engine stalls (heart fails, cardiac output collapses), and the car stops dead (shock, organ failure, death). Every symptom—the heat, the noise, the fluid loss, the eventual breakdown—is because the fuel supply is jammed open, not because anything else broke first.
