Serotonin Syndrome

The one-line truth

Taking two drugs that both raise serotonin (like an SSRI plus an MAOI, linezolid, tramadol, methylene blue, or MDMA) floods the brain with too much serotonin and poisons the nervous system.

The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

Taking two drugs that both raise serotonin (like an SSRI plus an MAOI, linezolid, tramadol, methylene blue, or MDMA) floods the brain with too much serotonin and poisons the nervous system.

Two Broken Garbage Disposals

Imagine serotonin as trash that needs to be removed from a kitchen sink (the synapse, the gap between nerve cells). Normally, one garbage disposal (the SERT reuptake pump) sucks the trash back down into the pipe below, and another disposal (the MAO enzyme) shreds it inside the pipe so it disappears forever. When you take an SSRI, the first disposal jams and trash piles up in the sink. When you add an MAOI, the second disposal also jams and trash that was supposed to be shredded stays whole and keeps triggering the sink's alarm system (the serotonin receptors). With both disposals broken, trash floods the entire kitchen, the alarm screams non-stop, the thermostat goes haywire, and pipes burst from pressure—that's your brain and muscles locking up with uncontrolled firing. Stop adding new trash (stop the drugs) and the sink slowly drains; cool the kitchen down (ice baths, sedation) and you survive. Keep adding trash and the pipes burst for good.
