Phase 1 · Understand the Body — Why the disease behaves the way it does.
The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
Your immune system is attacking the soft lining inside your joints.
Your Joint's Friendly Fire Incident
Imagine your immune system is a security team patrolling a factory (your body). The synovium is like the factory's oiling system that keeps machines running smoothly—it has an ID badge that says 'we belong here.' Normally, security ignores it and hunts only for intruders without badges. But in rheumatoid arthritis, security gets confused and starts attacking the oiling system as if it were a spy. Security floods the factory floor (white blood cells invade the joint), rips apart the oiling equipment (pannus eats cartilage), and even sabotages the building's support beams (bone erosions). Because the security system broadcasts a radio alert across the whole factory (autoantibodies circulate in blood), multiple machines get hit at once on both sides (symmetric polyarthritis). The harder security works, the more damage spreads—until the whole system seizes up (joint destruction and deformity).
