City Power Grid After Total Blackout

Imagine a city whose power plant (the heart) suddenly shuts down completely. For the first few minutes, backup batteries (stored oxygen in cells) keep critical systems like the control tower (brain) running. But after 4–6 minutes, those batteries die and the control tower goes dark—its computers overheat, their circuits corrode, and toxic smoke damages nearby electronics even after power is restored. When the power plant restarts, it pumps electricity back through the grid so fast that the surge fries transformers and transmission lines (ischemia–reperfusion injury). The control tower, even though it has power again, is too damaged to direct traffic; the power plant itself is so exhausted it can barely produce electricity (myocardial stunning). The original reason the plant shut down—say, a reactor coolant leak or sabotage (the precipitating cause)—is still happening, so the blackout will happen again unless that root problem is fixed first. The city's survival depends on those first few minutes of emergency generators (CPR), how fast the plant restarts (defibrillation), and whether someone finds and patches the leak before it fails again.
