The Smoke Alarm in a Burning House

Imagine a house where the smoke alarm (amygdala) is wired backwards and super-sensitive. Normally, when smoke fills the kitchen, the alarm goes off and a smart manager in the office (prefrontal cortex) checks the cameras, sees it's just burnt toast, and tells the alarm to quiet down. But in this house, the manager's office was never properly built during construction—the wiring is thin and weak. So when the alarm screams, there's no strong voice to say 'it's okay.' Meanwhile, the house's natural fire-suppression system (serotonin and calming neurotransmitters) is running low, so even when the manager tries to send the 'calm down' signal, it barely reaches the alarm. The result: the alarm keeps blaring at full volume for any small puff of smoke. The resident (the person) lives in constant terror, blocks every window and door (splitting, clinginess) to prevent escape, and sometimes deliberately burns her own arm (self-injury) because the sharp, controlled pain feels more manageable than the overwhelming chaos of the alarm screaming. When the alarm won't stop, she considers burning the whole house down (suicidal crisis) just to make the noise stop.
