Phase 1 · Understand the Body — Why the disease behaves the way it does.
The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
The thyroid has stopped working, and the patient's whole body is shutting down.
Factory shutdown in winter
Your body is a factory, and thyroid hormone (T4/T3) is the order form telling every worker how fast to burn fuel and make heat. Cortisol is the emergency supply manager who keeps workers fed during a crisis. In myxedema coma, the order forms stop arriving AND a crisis hits (infection, cold, surgery) at the same time. The emergency manager is also gone (adrenal failure), so workers have no instructions and no backup supplies. The factory furnace (mitochondria) stops burning fuel, heat production drops and the building gets frozen, the conveyor belts (heart) slow to a crawl so supplies do not get delivered, the air vents (breathing center) go quiet so toxic waste (CO2) builds up inside, and eventually the whole operation grinds to a halt. The reason it is a crisis, not just slow, is that the stressor came when the factory was already completely empty — there is no reserve at all.
