The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
The immune system makes antibodies that block or destroy acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction (the tiny gap where a nerve ending talks to a muscle fiber), so the nerve's 'contract now' signal cannot get through.
A Postal System Under Sabotage
Imagine a post office where the mailman (motor neuron) perfectly delivers letters (acetylcholine) to mailboxes (acetylcholine receptors) on houses (muscle fibers), and normally 10,000 mailboxes line the street so even if a few are broken, mail gets through and the house (muscle) wakes up and does its job. But a saboteur (your own immune system) starts spray-painting mailboxes red and smashing them with a hammer (antibodies blocking, cross-linking, and destroying receptors). On the first delivery of the day, there are still 5,000 working mailboxes, so the mailman delivers enough letters and the house stirs—muscles contract fine on the first try. But the mailman only carries so many letters per trip (limited acetylcholine per nerve impulse), so by the third or fourth delivery round, he has fewer letters left and only 3,000 mailboxes are still standing. Now not enough houses get mail to wake up—the muscle fails mid-chew or mid-eye-movement (fatigable weakness). That night, the mailman rests and refills his bag (acetylcholine rebuilds), and some of the smashed mailboxes are hastily repaired and reopened (receptors recycle to the surface), so the next morning he can deliver again—but the sabotage never stops, so the cycle repeats. Eventually the saboteur destroys so many mailboxes that even the diaphragm's mailboxes (respiratory muscles) cannot get enough mail, the house stops breathing, and crisis hits.
