The Penis as a Pressurized Water System

Think of the penis like a water delivery system in a city: the arteries are the incoming water mains that must open wide (dilate) to let water rush in; the three spongy cylinders (corpora cavernosa) are the storage tanks that fill with pressurized water; the veins are the drainage pipes that must clamp shut to trap water inside and keep pressure up; the nerves are the control switches that tell the mains to open and drains to close; and testosterone is the utility company's fuel that keeps workers motivated and the whole system maintained. When bacteria invade (like contamination in the water), the lining of the pipes gets inflamed and damaged, causing discharge and pain. When arteries clog from plaque (like mineral deposits choking the mains), water cannot fill the tanks fast enough, so pressure stays low—that is erectile dysfunction. When a hormone like testosterone runs low (like the utility company cutting staff and fuel), the workers get tired, the mains do not open on command, the tanks do not fill, and the entire system fails. The damage from syphilis or low testosterone is not a temporary leak—it is permanent rust and corrosion in the pipe walls that no amount of water pressure can undo.
