The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

Flu is a virus that attacks the wet lining inside your nose, throat, and lungs, causing sudden fever, body aches, and cough — and high-risk people can get pneumonia fast.

Home Invasion and Fire Alarm

Your airway lining is like a house with a burglar alarm and a security guard patrolling the windows. The flu virus is like a burglar who cuts through the window lock (sialic acid receptor binding) and breaks in. Once inside, the burglar hijacks your house's machinery to print thousands of copies of himself (viral replication in the cell nucleus), then blows up the house to escape (cell lysis), spreading to neighbors' houses nearby. The security guard (immune cells) and the house alarm system (cytokines) sense the break-in and trigger the neighborhood siren (fever and inflammation), which tells everyone something is wrong—but the burglar has a 24-hour head start, so the damage spreads fast. If the neighborhood's fire department (antibiotics and your immune system) doesn't arrive within 48 hours, bacteria already outside the house slip through the broken windows and start fires in the basements (secondary pneumonia in the alveoli), which spreads the damage deeper than the original break-in.
