The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
The immune system mistakenly attacks the gut lining over and over, causing long-lasting swelling and damage.
The Immune System's Broken Security Guard
Imagine your gut lining is a bank with two job roles: tellers (the gut cells) who let good money through, and security guards (immune cells) who stop counterfeits. In IBD, the security guards have forgotten which bills are real. They attack the tellers themselves, punch holes in the vault walls, and call in backup every time they see a customer—even a loyal one. The vault (your gut barrier) gets so damaged that real counterfeit money leaks out anyway, triggering more panic. The guards build walls of scar tissue to contain the mess, but because they never stop attacking, the walls just get thicker and block access to the vault's goods. Without someone teaching the guards to calm down and remember which customers are safe, the bank (your gut) never heals—it just bleeds, leaks, and slowly starves the whole operation.
