Phase 1 · Understand the Body — Why the disease behaves the way it does.
The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
This is a life-threatening drop in thyroid hormone that shuts down the body's engine.
A car engine in deep freeze without fuel
Your body is like a car whose engine (thyroid hormone) has almost completely run out of fuel. Normally, the engine burns fuel steadily to keep the car warm, the battery charged, and all systems running. But now the fuel tank (the damaged thyroid) is nearly empty, and then a snowstorm hits (the stressor: infection, cold, stopping medicine). The engine sputters and nearly stops. The car's heater fails (no heat production, so hypothermia sets in). The battery drains because the engine is barely turning (bradycardia and weak heart output). The windshield fogs over because the defroster is dead (confused thinking from cold and low oxygen). The battery runs so low that the starter motor can barely turn the engine over (eventual cardiac arrest). Unlike a real car, you cannot just pour in fuel — you have to give the engine special starter fluid (IV thyroid hormone) AND jump the battery (hydrocortisone, IV fluids, rewarming), or the whole system collapses.
