The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

HIV is a virus that gets inside CD4 cells — the white blood cells that direct your immune system — copies itself, and kills those cells one by one until your body can't fight off germs anymore.

A factory under sabotage by a shape-shifting spy

Imagine a factory (your lymph node) where the foreman (CD4 cell) reads orders and tells workers what to build. A spy (HIV) sneaks in wearing a fake ID badge that matches the foreman's lock, gets buzzed through the door (CD4 receptor and co-receptor), and injects a blueprint machine (reverse transcriptase) into the foreman's brain. This machine writes the spy's evil plans backward into the foreman's own memory (integrase inserts viral DNA into your chromosome). The foreman, now hijacked, starts printing thousands of baby spies instead of doing his real job. The factory swells and explodes, releasing the spies everywhere. Fewer foremen means fewer orders get read, so the workers (other immune cells) never wake up, and infections slip past unchecked. When you give the foreman a poison pill (ART), the blueprint machine breaks and no new spies are born — the factory recovers.
