The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

BRCA mutations disable critical DNA repair mechanisms, allowing cancer-causing genetic errors to accumulate unchecked in breast and ovarian tissues.

The Broken Security System

Imagine a high-security building where BRCA proteins are the security team that patrols for structural cracks in the walls and floors—these cracks (DNA breaks) appear constantly from normal wear and tear. The security team uses blueprints (the matching chromosome) to repair damage perfectly before it spreads. But if you inherit a weakened security team (one functional BRCA gene), you're already vulnerable. If that remaining team gets disbanded in one section of the building (second hit in a breast cell), that area loses all repair capability and starts using duct tape and glue (error-prone NHEJ) to patch cracks. Each bad patch introduces structural flaws, and over years, these flaws weaken support beams (tumor suppressor genes like TP53) until the building becomes unstable. Eventually, the structural damage spreads to other floors (metastasis) and the building collapses (organ failure).
