The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

G6PD deficiency means red blood cells cannot protect themselves from oxidative stress, so they suddenly burst when exposed to certain triggers like fava beans, infections, or specific medications.

The Battery-Powered Air Filter

Imagine a red blood cell as a delivery truck constantly driving through a polluted city (the bloodstream). G6PD is the battery that powers the truck's air filter, keeping toxic fumes (oxidants like hydrogen peroxide) from damaging the engine (hemoglobin) and the truck's frame (cell membrane). In G6PD deficiency, the battery is weak, so when the truck drives through extra-polluted zones (triggered by infections, fava beans, or certain drugs), the air filter can't keep up. Poisonous fumes build up inside the cab, the engine corrodes into clumps (Heinz bodies), and the frame rusts and cracks (membrane damage). The truck suddenly breaks down and stops working, and the body has to scrap it faster than the factory (bone marrow) can build new ones.
