Dysthymia (Persistent Depressive Disorder)

The one-line truth

Dysthymia is depression as a climate instead of a storm — a low mood most of the day, more days than not, for at least two years, so constant that many patients stop calling it an illness and start calling it their personality.

The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

Dysthymia is depression as a climate instead of a storm — a low mood most of the day, more days than not, for at least two years, so constant that many patients stop calling it an illness and start calling it their personality.

The Dimmed Thermostat

Imagine your home's heating system has a thermostat that sets the baseline temperature. In healthy mood, that thermostat is set to 68°F — losses and stress might drop it to 55°F for a few days, but it automatically resets. In dysthymia, the thermostat itself gets stuck at 55°F; the system still works, but it's working to maintain coldness instead of warmth. You stop noticing it's cold because you've lived in 55°F so long you've reorganized your whole life around it — wearing layers permanently, canceling outdoor plans, forgetting what 68°F felt like. The furnace hasn't broken; the setpoint has broken. And because the cold is steady rather than shocking, nobody — not you, not your family — calls the repair person until years pass and you realize you've been shivering the whole time.
