Assembly Line with a Broken Conveyor

Swallowing is like a factory assembly line where food is the product moving through stations. The brain is the control room that sends the signal to start the line (the swallow reflex). The throat muscles are the workers at each station who grab and pass the product forward in a precise sequence—if they are weak or confused, the product gets dropped or moves backward instead of forward. The epiglottis is the safety gate that flips down to divert traffic from the main hallway (windpipe) into the side chute (esophagus)—if this gate does not close fast enough, the product spills into the hallway and contaminates it. The esophagus is the conveyor belt that automatically squeezes in waves to push the product downward—if the belt stops working (motility disorder) or if a piece of equipment blocks the belt (tumor or stricture), the product piles up and never reaches the shipping dock (stomach). When the product goes into the wrong chute repeatedly, contamination spreads and causes an infection (aspiration pneumonia).
