A city blackout — burning the furniture

Glucose is fuel arriving by truck, and insulin is the delivery driver with the only key to every front door — without the driver, fuel piles up in the streets (blood) while every home (cell) goes cold. Desperate, the homes start burning furniture to stay warm: that's fat breaking down, and the thick acidic smoke that fills the streets is ketones souring the blood. The city tries to hose the piled-up fuel into the sewers — that's the kidneys flushing glucose into urine — but the hoses drag out the city's water and salts with it, which is why the patient is liters dry. Every treatment maps back: refill the water mains first (IV fluids), then send in new drivers (insulin drip) so the homes stop burning furniture and the smoke clears.
