The One-Line Truth
The whole disease in one chain
Everything on this page exists to explain this line.
SARS-CoV-2 virus enters through ACE2 receptors in the airway and lungs, triggering immune swelling that ranges from mild cough to life-threatening lung failure.
A Factory Fire Spreading Through the Building
Imagine a factory where each worker (airway cell) has a specific door lock (ACE2 receptor) on the front door. SARS-CoV-2is like a thief who knows the exact lock design, picks it, sneaks inside, and uses the worker's own tools to make thousands of fake copies of himself before exploding out and infecting neighbors. The factory's security team (immune system) responds by flooding the hallways with alarm chemicals (cytokines) and sending guards (white blood cells) to kill infected workers, but this creates massive smoke and debris (inflammation and fluid) that clogs the ventilation shafts (alveoli) where air normally flows freely. In mild cases, security contains the fire to one floor and it burns out in a week. In severe cases, the fire spreads so fast and the smoke gets so thick that the ventilation system completely fails, the security team panics and over-responds with too many chemicals (cytokine storm), and the entire building fills with toxic smoke and water from the fire hoses (pulmonary swelling (edema) and ARDS)—now no air can enter, and without outside rescue (ventilator), everyone inside suffocates.
