The One-Line Truth

The whole disease in one chain

Everything on this page exists to explain this line.

Air goes in but cannot come back out.

A stuck traffic jam in the lungs

Imagine a highway where cars (air molecules) can enter easily through a wide on-ramp (inspiration), but the exit ramp is blocked by construction debris (mucus and swollen walls) AND the lane markers that kept cars organized (elastic fibers) have disappeared. Cars pile up on the highway faster than they can leave (air trapping). The highway gets so congested that it pushes backward and jams the on-ramp itself (flattened diaphragm loses mechanical advantage). Police (your sympathetic nervous system) arrive and try to clear the jam by waving cars faster and rerouting blood (adrenaline), but the fundamental problem—broken exits and collapsed structure—cannot be fixed by speeding up. The longer cars sit idle, exhaust fumes build up (CO2 accumulates) and drivers get drowsy (CO2 narcosis). Eventually, the pressure from all those stuck cars can burst a weak spot in the pavement (pneumothorax from bleb rupture).
