The Gated City Under Siege

Think of your bloodstream as a walled city where blood cells are the citizens and nutrients are the goods flowing in and out. The skin is the city wall—normally unbroken and guarded, keeping out the barbarian bacteria that camp outside on every inch of the wall's surface. A central line is like punching a permanent hole through that wall to deliver supplies faster, but now there's a direct tunnel from the barbarian camps straight into the city. If the construction crew (sterile technique) doesn't follow safety rules, barbarians sneak in during the work. Once inside, bacteria land on the plastic tunnel wall (the catheter) like settlers building a fortress—but here's the key: the city's guards (white blood cells) cannot patrol inside the plastic tunnel itself because it's not living tissue. The bacteria cement themselves down with biofilm, a sticky mortar that makes them 1,000 times harder to kill. Now showers of invaders pour into the city every few hours, overwhelming the guards, and the city's defenses (fever, fast heartbeat, inflammation) become so desperate they start damaging the city itself—blood vessels leak, blood pressure crashes, and the city collapses into chaos (septic shock).
