The Invaded Castle with a Poisoned Well

Imagine a medieval castle (your body) with three defenses: a stone wall (skin barrier), guards in the courtyard (white blood cells), and a moat filled with loyal soldiers (good bacteria). Candida yeast is like peasants living peacefully outside the castle walls—harmless as long as they stay out. But when you drive a supply wagon through the wall every day (central line catheter), invaders slip in along with the supplies. Or when the moat dries up because you've poisoned it with antibiotics (killing the loyal soldiers), the yeast multiply unchecked in the outer town and breach the weakened walls. Once inside the bloodstream (the castle's main road), the yeast spread everywhere—some settle in the throne room (heart valves causing endocarditis), others in the treasury (liver and spleen forming abscesses), and some in the guard tower windows (eye causing endophthalmitis). The castle's remaining guards (weakened immune system from chemotherapy or steroids) cannot stop them fast enough, so the body burns with fever (raising the thermostat to kill invaders) and the guards leak through the walls (blood vessels become permeable, blood pressure drops). Without reinforcements (antifungal drugs) and closing the wagon gate (removing the central line), the castle falls into septic shock and ruin.
