Alcohol Use Disorder

The one-line truth

A Home's Electrical System in Overload

Picture a house's electrical system with two opposing forces: a dimmer switch (GABA, the calming system) that can turn lights down, and a breaker panel (NMDA glutamate receptors, the activating system) that sends power surging through. Alcohol is like temporarily adding extra dimmers to calm everything down—the house feels peaceful and stable. But the electrical company (your brain's neurons) notices the extra dimmers are always being used, so it removes some of them and installs extra breakers to try to restore balance—this is neuroadaptation, and it creates tolerance. When you suddenly shut off the alcohol (unplug the temporary dimmers), the breakers that were compensating now flood the house with uncontrolled power: lights flicker wildly, circuits overheat, and the whole system can catch fire—this is withdrawal and seizures. Meanwhile, the house's control panel (prefrontal cortex) that decides whether to flip switches gets damaged and can no longer override the chaos, so even when the owner knows they should stop drinking, they can't pump the brakes.
